Arthur Ralph Arthur RALPH (1911-1975) was born in the Manchester Area. In early adulthood his mother, his father and his brother (that is all of his immediate family) died from cancer in a short space of time. Instead of saying: "There can be no God for this to happen." Arthur thought: "What kind of God allows this to happen?" So he set out on a search, delving into many ancient and contemporary religions and beliefs. Eventually his journey brought him to this Lodge of Living Stones.

He had been become a Mason some years earlier but had experienced only worldliness in the lodge. In the Lodge of Living Stones, he found he immediately recognised that the Masonic rituals told the story of the mystery of life.
He first worked as a buyer for the Co-Operative Society but later he became a teacher in a Manchester Junior School. He was to become a great teacher in all aspects of life. He used to say that every single piece of Masonic ritual is exactly right and he was able to demonstrate the truth behind all the Masonic allegories and symbols. In the last few months of his life, he demonstrated, step by step, the esoteric interpretation of the Initiation, Passing and Raising, ceremonies, by dressing as the Candidate and going through the ceremony explaining the significance of each detail as he went.

He was WM of the Lodge in 1955 & 56, 1965 & 66 and in 1973 & 74; he had the great gift of knowing what was troubling an individual brother Mason and he would write letters to throw light upon each such brother's problem. These letters have been collected and preserved by the Lodge and are a valuable resource for the stimulation of discussion at our meetings. "An example of one such letter can be viewed by clicking here."
